A forest of sunflowers are blooming thanks to an innovative science and art project successfully completed by Boys & Girls Club members. A unique partnership with multiple Clubs and Mounts Botanical Garden Palm Beach allowed the project to literally come to life with stunning results. More than 100 Club members were challenged to create kinetic art sculptures to protect the seeds from hungry birds. The high-tech scarecrows worked, allowing 30,000 sunflowers to bloom in a temporary garden that reclaimed an abandoned parking lot next to the botanical garden.

“Amazing partnerships not only make our community stronger, it ensures that Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County can accomplish our mission of making sure that all children can reach their full potential. This is the perfect example as to what can be accomplished when innovative ideas collide with collaboration,” said Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and Marketing Eric Roby.

All of the supplies for the kinetic sculptures were provided by the non-profits Jack the Bike Man and Resource Depot.  Marjorie S. Fisher Boys & Girls Club, Max  M. Fisher Boys & Girls Club, Florence De George Boys & Girls Club, Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club and Boys & Girls Club of Boca Raton participated in the program. Club members researched kinetic sculptures, studied engineering principles and learned about pollinators and other environmental issues while tackling this project.

Palm Beach County’s Channel 20 produced a video featuring the project and showing off the colorful garden.
