The 500 block of Clematis Street was closed to traffic and turned into a vibrant block party to celebrate Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) culture on Friday, March 4. The event was presented by Hospitality Helping Hands and 500 BLK Clematis. Club members from multiple Clubs performed along with Faith’s Place Marching Band and American Idol Finalist Willie Sparks.

“We are here to celebrate the talent in our Clubs and expose our members to HBCU culture.” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s Career Bound Director Chilondra Sheppard. “We want to show our members what it will be like when they attend college to make sure they are excited for their future. This is a small taste of what awaits them after graduating from high school.”

Club members from around the county attended the block party and their talents shined. Neil S Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club of Wellington members performed several dance routines, Club members from various Clubs sang songs and the Youth of the Year for the Marjorie S Fisher Boys & Girls Club Marissa Altuse read a poem by Maya Angelou.

A highlight was a performance by American Idol 2021 Finalist Willie Spence. He sang several inspirational songs. Spence has ties to the area and Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. He visited several Clubs before the performance to meet Club members and have a chance to speak with them in the Club setting.

The event wrapped up with every Club member jumping up and dancing. Restaurant goers and those walking by enjoyed the show and learned more about what Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County provides for our youth and saw their amazing talents first hand!
