BETHESDA EVENT TO HELP FEED BOYS & GIRLS CLUB KIDS AND THE COUNTY’S HUNGRY

The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea is coordinating an event that will provide food to thousands of Boys & Girls Club children, and to thousands more of the county’s hungry.

The two events — Palm Beach Unites on Feb. 8 and Empty Bowls on Feb. 13-14 — are part of the church’s Feeding in February initiative.

Helene Lorentzen and Frances Fisher are coordinating Palm Beach Unites, which aims to pack 100,000 healthy meals in three hours to be distributed to needy families through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

The Boys & Girls Clubs, Feeding Children Everywhere, the Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews and the Palm Beach Day Academy are partnering with Bethesda on Palm Beach Unites.

Two years ago, Bethesda partnered with Palm Beach Atlantic University on the project. This year, Bethesda members decided to bring the experience to the island by partnering with the Day Academy. The majority of the meals will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs for distribution. A portion also will go to Food for the Poor.

Day Academy classes are competing to see who can bring the most volunteers. The winning class will receive an award and a food truck lunch provided by PDQ.

Volunteers of all ages are needed to help with the three one-hour shifts, Fisher said. Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs also will help, she said.

“The astounding statistic is that 1 in 6 children in Palm Beach County are unsure where their next meal is coming from,” Fisher said. “It really is empowering for us to provide these meals with dignity.”
