Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy to life through the MLK Rise to Serve initiative, a powerful, three-week experience that engaged 315 teens from all teen-serving Club sites in service, leadership, and civic reflection. Designed to be more than just a moment, the initiative created intentional space for learning, preparation, and youth leadership development rooted in Dr. King’s message of purpose and service.
Led by Great Futures AmeriCorps members, the experience encouraged teens to reflect on Dr. King’s teachings and explore how his words remain relevant today. Over the course of three weeks, participants took part in meaningful activities that connected personal growth to community impact, culminating in a dynamic, countywide Rise to Serve event.
On Friday, January 23, 2026, teens truly took the lead. The culminating celebration featured youth-led performances and presentations, including dance, inspirational speeches, and motivational reflections shared by Youth of the Year finalists. These powerful moments highlighted teens’ voices, talents, and confidence while reinforcing the importance of civic responsibility and service. Interactive elements, such as the Dream Wall, invited participants to reflect on their goals, values, and the role service plays in creating positive change in their communities.
The experience was further strengthened by the participation of Volunteer Florida Program Managers Gianna Previte and Michael Miller, along with AmeriCorps members from the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, underscoring the power of collaboration across service programs. Together, their involvement demonstrated the collective impact of AmeriCorps in fostering meaningful youth engagement and leadership.
Overall, the three-week MLK Rise to Serve initiative strengthened youth leadership, fostered countywide connections, and created opportunities for teens to celebrate, have fun, and honor Dr. King’s legacy. It served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are empowered to lead with purpose.
