Teen Center member wins national photography contest

Culture and Tradition, 12, Indwoesline Jean Pierre

A Smith & Moore Family Teen Center member won Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National ImageMakers photography contest. Indwoesline P. named the photograph “You and Me Bro” and won the highly competitive contest’s Culture and Tradition category.

Andrea Sarcos is a professional photographer and Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County staff member who teaches photography to Club members across the county. During ongoing photography workshops, she taught Club members and prepared them for the competition by walking through their neighborhood and taking photographs. Four Club members’ photographs won regional awards, which were then entered into the national competition.

“The student who took this winning photo, Indwoesline, is so kind and creative and a great listener. She took this photo during her second class! She’s a natural talent. She saw the light, the moment, and framed it just beautifully during one of our photo walks around Belle Glade,” said Sarcos.

The winning photograph has gained even more community importance because the man on the left holding the phone was shot and killed shortly after this photograph was taken. Another picture was taken of the young man with his toddler son. Both pictures will be hung side-by-side inside the Smith & Moore Family Teen Center.

For nearly 50 years, the Clubs have recognized members for their outstanding photography accomplishments to capture the beauty of nature, fashion and style, culture, and more. The four winners of the ImageMaker Regional Contest for this year were Indwoesline P., Nyomi D. and Ca’Nya O. from the Smith & Moore Family Teen Center, and Sarah A. from the Boys & Girls Club of Delray Beach.
