Summer of Stories: The Juice Summer Reading Program

For the third year, our teens embarked on a journey of self-expression and discovery through reading with the Juice Summer Literacy Program!

The Juice is an innovative online news platform that presents five news stories on current events at four different reading levels, including accessibility features to meet the diverse needs of our Club members. Not only does this program increase reading comprehension skills, but it also promotes awareness of current events and enhances communication and critical thinking skills. In addition, the Juice prepares our Club members for education and work opportunities beyond high school by equipping them with essential research skills.

Over 1,200 Club members across 14 sites participated in 20 sessions where they explored five news articles. After they read the news stories, Club members took quizzes based on the content of the stories where the average score is up 16% from last year. This increase reflects deeper comprehension, greater focus, and more meaningful interaction with the stories read. Vocabularies were also expanded, building sophisticated language skills these Club members need to engage with complex texts and ideas.

“The Juice is more relaxed and lets you take everything in without overloading you. You feel comfortable reading it, but it also challenges you so you don’t get bored. It encourages me to keep reading, learn new things, and answer the questions correctly.” Mia D. and Isaac N., Club members from the Marjorie S. Fisher Boys & Girls Club.

We are so proud of our Club members for taking on this challenge again this year and for expanding their knowledge in new ways!

Thank you to the Juice for joining us again this summer and for promoting these essential reading comprehension skills to our teens!
