Club Members Shoot Healthy Hoops®

Basketball in Gym

Over 1000 summer camp Club members across five Clubs participated in a series of Healthy Hoops® basketball clinics. School is out, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County are committed to keeping members happy, active and safe during the long summer months. Healthy Hoops® AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership’s signature health program is a hands-on basketball clinic where throughout facilitators provide guidelines on managing asthma, childhood obesity, and their related health conditions. The clinic encouraged members to implement small changes which over time will lead to healthier lifestyles.

“Every Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County summer camper deserves to have a memorable, fun-filled summer. By providing interactive clinics like Healthy Hoops, we can change the trajectory of their lives in unforgettable ways,” said President and CEO for Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Jaene Miranda. “This collaboration with AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership has increased the level of education our Club members and their families have, in regards to adopting healthy lifestyles and behaviors.”

Using basketball as a platform, Healthy Hoops® not only provides a fun, active learning environment, but also serves as a path to better health outcomes for Club members.  Various basketball drills were focused around improving basic basketball skills while interlaced challenges helped members to better understand their most common health risk, how to reduce factors of chronic diseases, and take charge of their health — on and off the court. Other topics discussed included proper nutrition, asthma triggers and weight management.  In collaboration with AmeriHealth Caritas Florida, AmeriHealth Caritas Partnership Healthy Hoops® also provided over 1000 basketball’s, swag bags and health educational workbooks during the clinics. There was even a special appearance by Owlsley, Florida Atlantic University biggest fan. Each event concluded with a musical and dance performance highlighting the dangers of tobacco, e-cigarettes, and vaping.
